what if...
Albus Dumbledore made the mistake of allowing Tom Riddle to take the Defence Against the Dark Arts position. With one move, history was changed, and sides have shifted. Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix are now considered terrorists, bent on disrupting the way of life of the wizarding world. It is considered illegal to be a member of the Order, whereas being a Death Eater increases one's status. Now the Headmaster of Hogwarts, the Dark Lord controls attendance, and standards have tightened. No longer are the likes of Crabbe and Goyle permitted to soil the halls of Hogwarts. All students are thoroughly tested for magical prowess, even muggleborns, who are removed from the muggle world as soon as they show magical powers and placed with pureblooded families.
Although they do not have the status of a pureblood, it is no longer quite a stigma to be a muggleborn, and bloodlines are flourishing as a result of their intermixing with the pureblooded lines. Gifts thought to be lost are starting to crop up again in families.
The wizarding world is a better place for werewolves and vampires as well as other dark creatures, provided they swear their allegiance to the Dark Lord. inherently light families such as the Weasleys and the Longbottoms are regarded with heavy suspicion while dark families such as the Blacks are welcomed with opened arms. With all of these twists, it's bound to be an electric shock!
